Abstract

Following the route of Portuguese expansion, the Jesuit Mission Press produced linguistic works of indigenous languages of Africa, Brazil, India and Japan. Those concerning Japanese are indispensable for a historical study of the Japanese language. In this article the following points are considered in detail: the importance of the printing press; reasons of the abundance and high quality of linguistic works concerning Japanese; the process of printing of the first Japanese grammar by Father João Rodrigues.
