Pronominal forms of the tu and você paradigms in complementation and adjunction structures in the 19th and 20th centuries: historical evidence from written Brazilian Portuguese

In this article, we present an overview of the second-person singular pronoun strategies in productive complementation and adjunction structures in personal letters from the 19th and 20th centuries. Based on the parameters of historical sociolinguistics (Hernández-Campoy & Schilling, 2012), we followed, using samples of Brazilian writers’ writing, the diversification of non-subject pronouns into complementation and adjunction structures. Complementation structures prevail based on verbal nuclei that predicate dative structures. We identified forms nucleated by você in letters of você-subject, which suggests confirmation of the discussion by Lopes et al. (2009) about the insertion of você in other syntactic contexts (non-subject), with different levels of productivity. We also note the coexistence of forms of the tu paradigm with forms of the você paradigm even in the intimate writing of writers who are well-versed in writing models and in understanding the parameters of the standard norm.
