Abstract
Em 1936 começou a funcionar no Rio de Janeiro a Universidade do Distrito Federal, semente áurea do que viriam a ser no Brasil os cursos supe¬riores de Letras, e Ciências Humanas em geral. Como não dispuséssemos de professores especializados nessa área, com formação universitária, embora em certos domínios, como o da língua portuguesa, pudéssemos contar com autodi-datas de extrema competência, foi o eminente acadêmico Afrânio Peixoto, a quem tanto deve a alta cultura brasileira, encarregado de ir buscar na Europa, fonte generosa de nossos saberes, mestres que preparassem continuadores de seu mister acadêmico.
