Abstract

Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic change that occurs during cell division of the embryo and leads, among other things, hypotonic orofacial muscles and macroglossy. In this paper we describe the acoustic characteristics of vowel /a/ produced by individuals with Down syndrome, assuming that these anatomical features interfere with the acoustic signal of this vowel, when produced by these subjects. Based on the Source Filter Theory, of Fant (1960), we measured in script via Praat, the values of the first three formants of data from 08 adult subjects, female and male, born in Vitoria da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil, 04 with DS and 04 without the syndrome.
