Abstract

The Grammatica Portugueza pelo Methodo Confuso (1928), written by José Madeira de Freitas (1893-1944), a physician from Rio de Janeiro, is a humorous grammar that combines hilarious metalinguistic explanations and solutions with other precise and accurate ones. After a brief literary and historical introduction, this article aims to present the most essential characteristics of ‘linguistics through the confusing method’.
