Abstract
Trata~se, como já se viu, da versão portuguesa de um dos melhors livros escritos sobre a jovem ciência, ou disciplina, batizada como Estilística por seu fundador, Charles Bally, discípulo e editor de Ferdinand de Saussure. Poucos anos depois do mestre francês, o lingüista germânico Karl Vossker trouxe análoga novidade ao càmpo dos estudos lingüísticos, mas com objetivo diferente e utilizando um método totalmente diverso. Abre, então, o século XX com duas propostas novas, uma muito fecunda, outra realmente de vida pouco mais que efêmera, porque a Estilística de Vossler, de Spitzer e de Amado Alonso, foi suplantada por outras correntes mais ou i:nenos vaporosas e, por fim, foi deglutida pelas diversas Teorias da Literatura, conflitantes ou excludentes uma da outra.
