Abstract

This research provides an analysis of saber in its evidential deictic use in Spanish, seeking: (i) to elucidate its grammatical behavior in the expression of evidentiality (HENGEVELD; HATTNHER, 2015) and (ii) to relate the uses found to notions of intersubjectivity (NUYTS, 2001a;2001b;2014) and reliability (CORNILLIE 2007;2009; ESTELLÉS E ALBELDA, 2018). We discussed the evidential uses of saber extracted from CORPES XXI starting from categories defined based on Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG) (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008), and we quantitatively analyzed the data using SPSS. We verified the expression of Reportativity, Inference, and Deduction. Modifiers with time specifications often occurred in the Reportativity, reinforcing the widely shared and available character of the information. This subtype was also related to the “present” location or the “present” temporal trace. We observed that saber constitutes an option to express a reliability effect, given the combinability with intersubjective evidence source and information dissemination contexts.
