Necessary knowledge for reading stress signs in Portuguese

Abstract

In this paper, I clarify the advantage educators can obtain from the written Portuguese system transparency, for an excellent early literacy for reading, illustrating such transparency with the economy principle and the linguistic zero value application, for stress attribution to the most frequent words in written Portuguese, exempting them from the graphic correspondent marks. Therefore, all words with more than two syllables that end with the letters 'a', 'e', 'o', whether or not followed by 's' and by 'em', 'ens', 'am', without any graphic diacritic (the most frequent in written Portuguese), are read as paroxytons. I also demonstrate how the written Portuguese system allows the identification of clitics that end with letters 'a', 'e', 'o', followed or not by 's', in contrast to the impossibility of delimiting them in the speak chain.
