The linguistic sign: the adventure of a concept

This article examines the hypothesis that Ferdinand de Saussure’s (1857-1913) use of the concept of sign from the classical philosophical tradition constitutes a conceptual shift that, once realized, enables the development of the theory of value and leads to a rupture with classical reflections on language. It explores how Saussure effectuates this shift, which, despite underpinning the transition from the concept of sign to that of value, does not exempt him from producing contradictions that threaten to obscure the full extent of the shift (Lier-DeVitto, 2018).
