The Importance of the school for the consolidation of the Italian language

In this article we deal with the Italian school at the time of the unification of Italy and its importance for the consolidation of the Italian language. At a time when most Italians did not speak and did not know the standard Italian language - they were literally illiterate - it was a political, grammatical, linguistic and cultural challenge to make it a common language through school performance. We discuss here the main issues of this scenario, in which the school assumed the role of disseminating the official language of the new country.
