Distinctive Collexeme Analysis (DCA) is a quantitative method that compares similar constructions regarding their collocational preferences. Like Hilpert (2006), we argue that the DCA is also useful for mapping changes over time, such as when sequential relations are reconfigured due to processes of automatization. In this study, we hypothesize that there exists a discourse structuring marker (DSM) with an additive value, whose main components are the preposition “sem” followed by a speech verb, which would result from the recategorization of a modal our conditional adverbial hypothetical clause (AHC) formed by the same elements. In total, we analyzed 754 tokens of the sequence “sem” + speech verb in the Portuguese Corpus 2022. We identified that the two constructions differ in their instantiation of the speech verb slot: 22 speech verbs appear in AHC, while only 6 occur in the DSM construction, with two of them (“contar” and “falar”) being highly attracted to the latter.
